Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is focused on changing how you relate to your thoughts and how those thoughts affect your behavior.
A spin-off from CBT, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy uses skills based in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness to improve responses to adverse situations and improve communication in relationships towards a life worth living.
This therapy involves tailoring interventions to your readiness to change.
It matches strategies to your specific stage of change (Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance) to reduce resistance and improve outcomes in areas like smoking cessation, weight management, exercise, and using skills.
Learn more about the stages here.
The goal is to help you learn how to notice, observe, and identify negative thoughts, feelings, and sensations, and find alternative ways to cope.
The miracle question (What do you imagine progress or the end goal to be?) in this therapy helps guide you from where you are to where you want to be.
The question is useful at the beginning of therapy and to check in on progress throughout.
People respond to modalities based on their values, upbringing, culture, ethnicity, etc, so therapy is adapted with a cultural, personal lens.
The idea is that most people are showing up to therapy with big "t" or little "t" traumas so therapy is adapted with a trauma lens.
